Day fishing at Oxbow Country Estate

Bronkhorstspruit

Activity Description

Sundowner Adventures offers day fishing for adults & children in a safe and secure environment. This is a great way to spend time in the outdoors with social distancing. Low season (1 Oct to 23 April) is summer time and we allow bass, bait, specimen carp and fly fishing. High season (24 April to 31 Sep) is winter trout season and only fly fishing is permitted. We are eco-friendly, promoting catch and release of fish (although trout may be kept and paid for by arrangement). Sport fishing a fun adventure for individuals, couples and families.

Fly-fishing is an art and clean (no grubby bait!). It is good exercise but you don’t a high fitness level.

The fishing equipment is available for hire, however you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Fishing flies or lures can be bought on site.

We often have fishing monitors on duty to provide guidance on the fishing rules/regulations and to assist with ensuring you have a wonderful experience. They will provide some basic fishing tips but if you want to learn more or have never fishing before then feel free to book one of our group or private fishing lessons.

We believe in keeping the sport environmentally friendly so all fish caught in the catch & release dams caught must be released (And we teach guests the proper techniques required for correctly releasing the fish so that they do not get injured). Most of the dams have Trout (Rainbow, Brown and Golden) and Bass. Academy dam has, Carp, Kurper, trout and bass.

The fishing is done on the six dams at Oxbow Country Estate. We are open for fishing three days a week (Wed,Sat & Sun). Bookings for exclusive or corporate events may be booked on the other days (Mon,Tues,Thu& Fri).

Customer Reviews

Oxbow instantly became one of my favourite fly fishing venues. I live in the Montana area in Pretoria and always had to travel 70-75km to Muldersdrift for fly fishing. The options there are limited and one place in particular became my go-to venue. However, when I called them in February this year they told me that they stocked trout the week before. When I arrived, there was nothing in their main dam. About a month later I read on Facebook that they received their permit and wil start to "stock trout soon". I did not like that. What struck me at Oxbow was the natural feel to the place. When you arrive, it feels like these dams have always been there and that you discovered a gem in the middle of the bush. It is rare to find such clear water at any still-water venue. Though the dams are generally very shallow and has some grass etc, I do not see that as a drawback. It has the benefit of making you think a bit and plan to fish higher in the water column. I also like it that not only Superman can cast to the middle of the dam. The fact that the dams are long and narrow, allows more bank space for anglers and you feel that you can cast anywhere in the dam - nothing is our of reach. I appreciate the fact that you stock golden, brown, red and rainbow. Most venues only stock rainbows, and even though some claim to stock browns, I have never seen anybody catch one. As a young angler (not young - 54, but young to the sport!) who only started fly fishing in December 2022 the golden trout is a blessing. As I cannot see the other trout in the water, I always had to depend on other peoples' opinions on what trout does in the water and how they behave. The fact that I can actually see the goldens, helps me as a beginner to get a gut-feel for trout behaviour and how to fish for them. The venue is great, the entrance fee is affordable, and I would be there every Saturday if my schedule and budget allowed it! I know that one wants a healthy balance of the number of fish in the dams, but every time that I have been there, it felt like I got my full worth - whether I catch 3 fish or 13! It feels like you stock enough fish to make it a worthwhile outing. On the first day I caught rainbows, browns, and goldens. It is only the elusive red that I am still hunting for! At Oxbow it was the first time that I saw someone dipping the fish in salt water before releasing them. I thing that it is a great idea and the practice makes sense. My wife came with me a week or two ago as a non-fishing guest and enjoyed it so much that we are binging the family for lunch at the Oxbow restaurant on Sunday, 19 May. I wam definitely going to show them the dams and wet my son-in-law;s appetite to join me on a fishing trip. Well doen Wayne and team! I hope Oxbow can continue to give us years of fishing pleasure. - Pieter

Exceptional service and Attention. Thank you for ever Wayne for getting two boys excited about fishing. Beautiful very well maintained venue. Looking forward to winter trout fishing and some cleared channels to fish - Daniel

We have only been twice to fish for bass. And on both occassions the bass were shy in taking a variery of lures we were using. That said the season was in the process of changing. And the weather was extremely unpredicable. However the weather was pleasant on both occassions. The challenge was getting the bass to take what we were offerring, Sundowner offers you an experience rather thajust another fishing outing. The cleanslness and tranquility of the surrounding is what will bring me back again and again. And ablutions on site, within walking distance of most dams. It really caters for the whole family. Young and old! It is awesome. :} I only have these suggestions: . Please errect a big sign indicating the way to Sundowner at the split on the sand road. Us oldies seem to get lost easily. .Please add one or two bigger bass to the dams. I can highly reccomend everyone to visit Sundower and try the experience. :} - Hilton

Fantastic fishing experience at a world class facility. Crystal clear water stocked with more than enough fish. On this visit I caught 3 x rainbow, 2 x golden and 2 x brown trout and 4 x bass. - Carlu

I had a great day out at Oxbow Country Estate. The venue is well maintained and the service was excellent. I am looking forward to my next visit. - Roshan
