Day fishing at Oxbow Country Estate

Bronkhorstspruit

Activity Description

Sundowner Adventures has multiple venues which offer day fishing for adults & children in a safe and secure environment. SunOx Fishing (Sundowner@Oxbow Country Estate) is our operation to the East of Pretoria.

This is a great way to spend time in the outdoors with social distancing. Low season (1 Oct to 30 April) is summer time and we allow bass, bait, specimen carp and fly fishing. High season (1 May to 31 Sep) is winter trout season and only fly fishing is permitted. We are eco-friendly, promoting catch and release of fish (although trout may be kept and paid for by arrangement). Sport fishing a fun adventure for individuals, couples and families.

Fly-fishing is an art and clean (no grubby bait!). It is good exercise but you don’t a high fitness level.

The fishing equipment is available for hire, however you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Fishing flies or lures can be bought on site.

We often have fishing monitors on duty to provide guidance on the fishing rules/regulations and to assist with ensuring you have a wonderful experience. They will provide some basic fishing tips but if you want to learn more or have never fishing before then feel free to book one of our group or private fishing lessons.

We believe in keeping the sport environmentally friendly so all fish caught in the catch & release dams caught must be released (And we teach guests the proper techniques required for correctly releasing the fish so that they do not get injured). Most of the dams have Trout (Rainbow, Brown and Golden) and Bass. Academy dam has, Carp, Kurper, trout and bass.

The fishing is done on the six dams at Oxbow Country Estate. We are open for fishing three days a week (Wed,Sat & Sun). Bookings for exclusive or corporate events may be booked on the other days (Mon,Tues,Thu& Fri).

Enjoyable experience. Grounds are very pretty. Tough fishing :) - Paul

No issues, a very enjoyable morning's fishing. The breakfast sandwich with a coffee is always good. - Alister

Really enjoyed the day out at Oxbow. The payment online in advance was easy, we were well received on arrival and the number of fly fisherman was well managed so that it didn't feel too busy. Great to see a facility so well set up and healthy fish and water systems. We'll certainly do this regularly. Thanks Wayne & team! - Michael

What a phenomenal day of fly fishing at Oxbow Country Estate with Sundowner Adventures! Landed some brilliant, hard-fighting trout in crystal-clear water. Huge thanks to Wayne/Bruce and the staff for being so welcoming and professional. Safe, scenic, and easily the best fly fishing venue anywhere near Johannesburg - Tracy

Great day with some challenging technical fishing. Only a handful of anglers so everyone had space to move. I arrived at 09.30ish & fishing was pretty slow until around mi-day when the water had gained a few deg's. Many large rainbow's patrolling the edges but not actively feeding & could obviously see you a mile off! I caught a released 6 fish & lost a few more. Estimate largest at about 1.5kg's. All taken in the afternoon on a team of tiny black flash-back buzzers (size 18) & very sparsely tied weighted nymphs - fished static with a short lift every minute or so. All fish taken on point fly at depth between 5 to 8 feet. I mostly fished further out in deeper water where I felt fish couldn't see me as clearly. There was a hatch of miniscule white midges at 2ish. fish actively rising. I tried a size 20 CDC midge. Had a few swirls but no commitment. All fish in beautiful condition. Mainly hen's, I think. As always, water was gin-clear & the venue, immaculate! - Justin
